In a stunning shift in Kenya’s telecommunications landscape, Airtel Kenya has outpaced industry giant Safaricom in net subscriber growth, officially crossing the 24 million subscriber mark and gaining serious ground in the competitive mobile market.
According to the latest data released by the Communications Authority of Kenya (CAK), Airtel added more new users than Safaricom over the past quarter, highlighting growing consumer confidence in its affordable data bundles, improved network coverage, and aggressive marketing campaigns.
This milestone marks a significant turning point for Airtel, which has long played second fiddle to Safaricom, the dominant player in the industry.
"Our consistent investment in expanding network infrastructure and offering customer-centric services is paying off. We are grateful to Kenyans for choosing Airtel," said Airtel Kenya CEO Ashish Malhotra.
Lower call and data rates: Airtel continues to win over price-sensitive users with unbeatable offers.
4G expansion: Rapid rollout of high-speed internet in both urban and rural areas.
Mobile money growth: Airtel Money is gaining traction as a strong alternative to M-PESA.
While Safaricom still holds the majority market share with over 40 million users, the growth gap between the two telecom giants is narrowing. Industry experts say the competition is intensifying, and Kenyans are benefiting the most from improved services and reduced prices.
"This growth is a clear sign that customers are open to switching if the value proposition is right," noted telecom analyst Martin Wanjohi.
As the battle for Kenya’s digital future heats up, one thing is certain: Airtel is no longer in the shadows—it's standing tall and winning hearts.
